TUESDAY POETRY - THE GLADIATOR AND THE MAIDEN

By Debbie Bulloch

THE GLADIATOR AND THE MAIDEN

Last night I dreamt of us - you and me
In my dream
We were just kids
You captained the football team
I was your cheerleader
An American dream

In my dream
It was fourth down
And our side was losing
You walked into the field
Your uniform bloodied
An American dream

In my dream
The crowd cheered you
You stood tall barking orders to your comrades
Then the other player took the ball
Tried to get it past you
An American dream

In my dream
You stood your ground
I heard the hit
A crunching sound that echoed in the crowded stands
When the ball popped loose it fell into your hands
An American dream

In my dream
You cradled the ball
And ran with it
Fast and strong
No one could deny you
An American dream

In my dream
The crowd jumped to its feet and cheered
Like a Roman gladiator
You stood in the middle of the arena
Covered in sweat and mud
An American dream

In my dream
I saw your bruised body
And I ran to you
The gladiator and the maiden holding on to each other
An the crowd disappeared
An American dream

In my dream
Hours later
With my cheerleader uniform
Scattered about the floor
I held you in my arms
An American dream

And in this dream
In my dream
An American dream
Our hands touched
While driving so fast down the road
That nothing could stop us

The room is quiet and I turn to you
I tenderly kiss your lips
No longer dreaming, I hear your breathing
The gladiator and the maiden
Together at last
An American dream
