FRIDAY AFTERNOON LIGHT

By Debbie Bulloch

This Friday, instead of the usual Friday Poet’s Corner, I would like to change pace just a tad and instead bring you instead Friday Afternoon Light. I promise, however, that the Poet’s Corner will return next Friday with a discussion of American poet Langston Hughes.

My daughter likes to play her music loud enough that I can hear it coming out from her room, but not so loud that the walls shake and come down – except when she is rocking to the Stones (go figure). Lately, however, I have been hearing Taylor Swift’s latest song, “Love Story.”

Last night I quietly stood outside her door and listened to the entire song. The song is a sweet ode to young love. It has a catchy beat and the lyrics are easy on this mom’s ears. So here it is, my daughter’s latest fave song:

Taylor Swift – Love Story

Here are the lyrics to “Love Story” – should I be worrying about some Romeo waiting on the wings for my daughter?

LOVE STORY

We were both young when I first saw you
I close my eyes
And the flashback starts
I'm standing there
On a balcony in summer air

See the lights
See the party, the ball gowns
I see you make your way through the crowd
And say hello, little did I know

That you were Romeo, you were throwing pebbles
And my daddy said stay away from Juliet
And I was crying on the staircase
Begging you please don't go, and I said

Romeo take me somewhere we can be alone
I'll be waiting all there's left to do is run
You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess
It's a love story baby just say yes

So I sneak out to the garden to see you
We keep quiet 'cause we're dead if they knew
So close your eyes
Escape this town for a little while

'Cause you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter
And my daddy said stay away from Juliet
But you were everything to me
I was begging you please don't go and I said

Romeo take me somewhere we can be alone
I'll be waiting all there's left to do is run
You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess
It's a love story baby just say yes

Romeo save me, they try to tell me how to feel
This love is difficult, but it's real
Don't be afraid, we'll make it out of this mess
It's a love story baby just say yes
Oh oh

I got tired of waiting
Wondering if you were ever coming around
My faith in you is fading
When I met you on the outskirts of town, and I said

Romeo save me I've been feeling so alone
I keep waiting for you but you never come
Is this in my head? I don't know what to think
He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring

And said, marry me Juliet
You'll never have to be alone
I love you and that's all I really know
I talked to your dad, go pick out a white dress
It's a love story baby just say yes

Oh, oh, oh, oh
'Cause we were both young when I first saw you

As long as we are on the subject of love songs (perfect theme for a Friday evening and the coming weekend) here is one of my own favorites songs, “You Are Still The One” by another fine Canadian export, Shania Twain. The song is a little more “mature” than Swift’s “Love Story,” but the idea is still the same – two people in love can make sparks fly! I especially like this video because it reminds me of my beloved coast line where I can always calm in the sound of the crashing waves - even in the middle of a storm .

Shania Twain – You’re Still The One

Here are the lyrics to “You’re Still The One”

YOU’RE STILL THE ONE

(When I first saw you, I saw love. and the
First time you touched me, I felt love. and
After all this time, you’re still the one I love.)

Looks like we made it
Look how far we’ve come my baby
We mighta took the long way
We knew wed get there someday

They said, “I bet they’ll never make it”
But just look at us holding on
Were still together still going strong

You’re still the one I run to
The one that I belong to
Youre still the one I want for life
(you’re still the one)
Youre still the one that I love
The only one I dream of
You’re still the one I kiss good night

Ain’t nothin better
We beat the odds together
I’m glad we didn’t listen
Look at what we would be missin

I’m so glad we made it
Look how far we’ve come my baby

Enjoy and have a fabulous weekend!
